Prominent Date Varieties

Several date varieties are particularly well-known and widely cultivated in Saudi Arabia. These include:


Ajwa: This variety, originating from Medina, is known for its dark brown to black color, soft, chewy texture, and prune-like flavor with hints of cinnamon, caramel, and honey. Ajwa dates are often referred to as "holy dates" and hold a special place in Islamic tradition.


Sukkari: Predominantly cultivated in the Qassim Province, Sukkari dates are among the sweetest and softest varieties, often described as "melt-in-the-mouth" soft. They have a golden color and a sweet, juicy flavor, and are sometimes called "royal dates".


Khalas: This is a premium variety, highly prized in the Middle East, known for its sweet flavor and rich, creamy texture. Khalas dates are often associated with hospitality and are a favorite during Ramadan.


Sagai: Sagai dates are recognized by their two-toned color, with a golden, dry tip and a brown, soft body. They have a mildly sweet flavor and a unique texture that is both crunchy and soft.


Safawi: Originating from the Al-Madina region, Safawi dates are deep black in color and have a soft, moist, and chewy texture with a sweet flavor. They are commercially available year-round.


Barhi: This variety is widely cultivated and known for its caramel-like flavor when ripe.


Khudri: Khudri dates are dark brown, with a chewy texture and a moderately sweet flavor with hints of caramel.


Mabroom: These dates have a light red to bronze skin and a chewy, sticky texture with a mildly sweet, smooth flavor and a hint of toffee.


Anbara: Found in Al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Province, Anbara dates are known for their large size.


Barni: Commonly grown in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah Province.


Helwa: Predominantly cultivated in al-Jawf and Hail provinces.


Sufri: Widely cultivated across most provinces, especially in Bishah Governorate in Aseer Province.
